Ball State’s French Teaching Major prepares students to teach French in grades 6–12 by combining language proficiency with pedagogical training and cultural literacy.

Through courses in grammar, phonetics, conversation, and literature, students will strengthen their command of French while gaining tools to effectively engage middle and high school learners. A required student teaching placement expands their experience and prepares students to meet Indiana licensure requirements. In addition to the required courses, students seeking a license to teach in the modern world languages need to complete a study program where the target language is spoken.

What You Will Learn

As a French teaching major, you’ll develop:

  • Fluency in spoken and written French
  • Strong knowledge of French and Francophone literature and culture
  • Competency in grammar, phonetics, and conversation
  • Classroom strategies for language instruction
  • Professional skills to succeed in student teaching and licensure exams
